SANTO DOMINGO. - A Navy coastguard vessel and a merchant ship rescued seven crewmembers of a freighter that sank to 82 nautical miles south of the Dominican Republic capital Santo Domingo, the Navy reported on Thursday.
The Bolivian registry ship Ocean Blue (IMO: 7024158) had set sail from Haina port 7:30 a.m. Tuesday for Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, but began to sink in the Caribbean at 17º 07.3 North latitude and 69º 50.0´ West Longitude, said Navy spokesman Agustín Morillo
He said as soon as the Federick Schad shipping agency communicated the emergency the Navy vessel Orión was sent on the search and rescue operation for the boat and crew.
He said when rescuers arrived the Ocean Blue was sinking and its crew had been rescued by the Liberian flag ship Adrián, that was bound for Portugal when it learned of the mishap.
The rescued crew are the ship captain Fabián Morla Isidro, and Freddy A. Mota Jiménez, Ramón Antonio Ovalle, Carlos Reyes, Juan Carlos Reynoso Rodríguez , Manuel Doñé and Daniel de Jesús García.
