THE British International Freight Association (BIFA) has warned that stowaways on trucks from Calais are threatening cross channel trade.
BIFA said that its members who tend to be truck hirers, rather than operators, are reporting increasing difficulties," said BIFA director general, Robert Keen.
"Our members' cross channel trailer services are targeted by the migrants putting the security of drivers, vehicles and loads at risk," said Mr Keen.
"This delays arrival times at depots, jeopardise the delivery and cause huge inefficiencies in their transport planning," he said.
Mr Keen pointed out that without French and British official action, there was a good chance international transport sub-contractors will refuse to operate in the continental-UK cross channel market.
"We are pressing the authorities to step up protection and fulfil their obligations before serious damage is done to this freight route," he said.
BIFA has welcomed news that Eurotunnel has converted its existing terminal parking area into an extended pre check-in zone in order to provide increased security for 150 additional trucks on site.
"The trade association is also pleased that later this year, Eurotunnel will be opening extended terminal facilities and a new secure truck park, which should further reduce the ability of migrants to climb aboard vehicles," BIFA said in the newsletter.
