CONSTRUCTION of the new berth four at Evergreen Group's Colon Container Terminal (CCT) on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal has been completed, raising capacity to 2.4 million TEU from 1.5 million TEU.
Phase Three of the CCT expansion adds 320 metres of quay and a 8.5-hectare container yard to the terminal, while the draft has been dredged to 16.5 metres. Three new ship-to-shore, 22-row cranes arrived in November and another STS 24-row crane is due to be delivered next year.
CCT is continuing with the next stage of its expansion programme to further increase the quay length of berths three and four to 780 metres, reported the UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
CCT registered the highest growth amongst Panamanian terminals in the first 10 months of the year, with volume up 20.8 per cent over the previous year to 666,846 TEU.
"I can foresee cargo volume picking up this year since we saw the return of Evergreen service NUE 3 and MELFI calling CCT since May while Cosco has increased their feeder services," said CCT chairman Yen-I Chang at a ceremony to mark the completion of berth four.
