The interim government of bangladesh plans to close several unprofitable land ports and transfer others to private sector management, according to Shipping and Textiles Adviser Brig Gen M Sakhawat Hussain.
Speaking during a visit to Hili land port in Dinajpur on August 9, Hussain confirmed that four of the country's 24 land ports have already been closed, with four more slated for shutdown due to lack of revenue generation.
He said infrastructure upgrades are being planned for viable ports, and problems will be addressed gradually. Business leaders at Hili urged improvements to roads, warehouse capacity, and overall port facilities during a meeting with the adviser.
Following the meeting, Hussain inspected customs and port operations and issued instructions to officials. The visit was attended by Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman Mohammad Manjarul Mannan, Rangpur Customs Commissioner Arun Kumar Biswas, and Hili Customs Assistant Commissioner ASM Akram.
The closures are part of broader reforms tied to public-private partnerships aimed at improving efficiency and reducing state losses in the logistics sector.
