BAHAMAS' Freeport led the Caribbean in container port throughput in 2012, reaching 1,202,000 TEU according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America.
Freeport was followed by Kingston, where last year's volume hit 1,139,418 TEU, reported the Miami-based Caribbean Journal. Freeport was ranked 11th in the Latin American and Caribbean region, which was led by Panama's Colon.
Freeport and the Dominican Republic's Port of Caucedo were the only Caribbean ports to maintain positive results in transshipments compared to 2011. Kingston suffered a 35.1 per cent drop in transshipments.
The next largest port in terms of box throughput was Caucedo the only other in the top 20. Trinidad's Port of Spain was ranked 31st; Guadeloupe's Jarry port ranked 42nd while Aruba's Oranjestad ranked 51st.
