USCG: 24 Survivors of Korean Vessel Fire Arrive on Saipan
24 survivors from the South Korean car carrier ASIAN EMPIRE that caught fire on April 19 are scheduled to arrive in Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (NMI) later today.
The ASIAN EMPIRE experienced a fire in the Pacific Ocean 400 nautical miles southeast of Japan on April 19, 2014. The fire caused the crew to abandon ship into life rafts.
The Japanese Coast Guard coordinated the response for the crew’s rescue. The Panama flagged refrigerated cargo ship ASIAN ADONIS diverted and recovered the survivors from their life rafts.
There were no reported injuries among the survivors.Japanese Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection Saipan, the vessel’s agent, and U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam coordinated efforts to ensure the safe arrival of the 24 survivors.
This is yet another example of how mariners routinely come to the aid of other mariners in distress.
