SPOT rates from the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SFCI) for shipping containers from Asia to northern Europe fell 23.5 per cent to US$658 per TEU last Friday while Asia-Mediterranean rates dropped 22.6 per cent to $776 per TEU from week to week.
Asia-North Europe spot rates are now 45 per cent lower than for the same period in 2014.
But carriers continue to announce rate increases for June 1. MSC wants to increase rates by $800 per TEU and $1,600 per FEU while Evergreen seeks $950 per TEU and $1,900 per FEU. "K" Line wants $1,000 more per TEU and $2,000 per FEU.
Transpacific Stabilisation Agreement (TSA) member carriers call for a $600 per FEU rate increase on June 1 and July 1 on top of a peak season surcharge of $400 per FEU in July for all cargo travelling from Asia to the US.
