THE arrival of the world's largest containership, the 18,000-TEU Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, at Tangiers recently provided APM Terminals a dockside box handling record of 29 moves per hour (MPH) at Morocco's Tanger-Med terminal.
"We are proud to charge forward into the next phase in the evolution of global shipping, in which we continue to serve as a key transshipment centre for the African and South American trade," said APM Terminals Tangier managing director Hartmut Goeritz.
Mr Goeritz said the handling of the Triple-E vessels was just one of the 200 vessels which pass through "one of the great maritime crossroads of the world" the Straits of Gibraltar each day, reported the UK's Port Technology International.
The Tangier-Med Phase I container terminal, which opened in July of 2007, is owned and operated by APM Terminals and the Moroccan Akwa Group. APM Terminals Tangier handled 1.23 million TEU in 2012, an increase of four per cent over volumes recorded in 2011.
