APM Terminals to invest US$70 million to expand New Jersey capacity
THE container handling capacity of APM Terminals' Port Elizabeth facility in the port of New York and New Jersey is to be expanded from 1.5 million TEU at present to 2.3 million TEU.
The terminal is one of the largest in the port complex, receiving 500 vessel calls annually.
APMT's investment of US$70 million to expand the Port Elizabeth terminal will enable it to receive increased loads arriving from larger vessels transiting the Panama Canal, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
"We applaud the Port Authority for deepening the harbour, heightening the Bayonne Bridge and listening to the changing needs of terminal operators and customers," said APM Terminals North America chief Wim Lagaay.
"Our investment in a new berth capable of handling 13,000-TEU vessels will help Port Elizabeth become even more competitive and represents the first in a series of modernisation initiatives," he said.
