THE Port of Antwerp posted a 1.3 per cent year-on-year increase in 2020 container volume to 12 million TEU, but overall cargo volume fell 3.1 per cent year on year to 231 million tonnes.
Nonetheless, compared with most other ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre range, the port held up well despite a year dominated by Covid and other trade tensions, said the port authority.
Container throughput again saw higher volumes since July that allowed the port to perform better than most others in the Hamburg-Le Havre range in 2020.
Both Covid and the increasing protectionism as a result of global trade tensions had an impact on breakbulk goods flows in 2020, resulting in a 16.3 per cent decrease in total throughput compared with 2019.
Steel, the main commodity group in this segment, was hit particularly hard. The car sector also suffered as a result of the Covid crisis and total ro-ro throughput fell 9.4 per cent. Throughput of new vehicles in 2020 fell 21.5 per cent while that of second-hand vehicles fell by 22.5 per cent year on year.
