Amazon will discontinue its Prime Invitee programme from October 1, ending the ability for Prime members to share free shipping with users outside their household. The company is urging those affected to subscribe independently, reported Associated Press.
The online retailer has updated its customer service page to reflect the change, which will restrict free shipping benefits to users sharing the same primary address. amazon is offering a discounted rate of US$14.99 for one year to new subscribers, valid from Friday until Dec. 31, 2025. Thereafter, the standard rate applies at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually.
Amazon Family will replace the Invitee programme, allowing Prime members to share benefits with one adult in their household, up to four teens added before April 7, and four child profiles. The adult may be a spouse, relative or roommate, according to Amazon.
The move coincides with Amazon's investment in expanding its delivery network to reach less densely populated areas across the US. As of late July, the service was available in 1,000 of the more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities targeted for rollout by year-end.
