AIR FRANCE KLM posted a second quarter net profit of EUR109 million (US$126.409 million) down from EUR593 million the previous year partly due to strike action by Air France staff costing the airline EUR335 million during the first half of the year. Higher pension and fuel expenses also dented the financial results.
Second quarter cargo revenues of the Franco-Dutch airline group rose by 7.3 per cent year on year to EUR543 million despite traffic falling 2.3 per cent to 2.1 billion cargo revenue tonne kilometres, reported London's Air Cargo News.
However, the traffic decline failed to stop the airline raising its cargo load factor for the period to 59.3 per cent against 59.1 per cent last year.
The airline group said that capacity during the period was impacted by the replacement of three Boeing 747 combi aircraft with B787s, while the ongoing strike action led to flight cancellations.
'The cargo business continued its turnaround in the second quarter 2018, with market demand remaining strong, especially on the Americas and Asia. The overall unit revenue increased by 6.3 per cent at constant currency,' the airline said.
