US JUSTICE Department prosecutors have charged two forwarders with conspiring to fix prices for forwarding services offered to shippers, reported American Shipper.
Roberto Dip, president of New Orleans-based Dip Shipping, and his sales chief Jason Handal, participated in the price-fixing scheme related to forwarding services with a group of Honduran forwarders for a year from March 2014.
Prosecutors allege, based on emails, that the accused discussed and agreed to raise prices charged to US customers by implementing set 'commissions' in port cities throughout the United States.
'Emails show that Dip and Handal were aware that their conduct was in violation of US antitrust laws and that they instructed co-conspirators to avoid leaving written evidence of their conduct,' the Justice Department said.
After their Miami arrests, the court ordered that Dip be detained pending trial, while Handal was released on $500,000 bail.
