THE Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has announced that its TraPac Container Terminal at Dames Point has welcomed the 8,100-TEU MOL Competence, the largest ship to call at Jacksonville's seaport to date.
The vessel travelled from south east Asia through the Suez Canal and called at other US east coast ports before arriving at TraPac in Florida.
TraPac Jacksonville general manager Dennis Kelly says the calling of post-Panamax sized ships at Jacksonville as part of a regular rotation through the Suez Canal demonstrates the port's strategic advantages for accommodating the larger ships stopping along the eastern seaboard, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
"When you have a port situated so close to so many consumers, distribution centres and retailers, the last mile is a lot more affordable and a lot easier, too," said Mr Kelly.
"It lends itself to a much more timely, efficient and reliable supply chain."
