THE joint North Europe (NE-1) service of Israel's ZIM and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) that links Hamburg port to Israel via the Mediterranean has added a new 6,350-TEU vessel to the routing.
A statement from Hamburg port authorities said transport volumes have grown continuously since 2007, in all by 21 per cent. Last year 62,000 TEU were transported on seaborne container services on this trade route.
ZIM had already extended and restructured the weekly NE-1 service at the beginning of 2013 in reaction to rising volumes and market demand.
Being deployed for the first time in the ocean liner service from July onwards, the newbuilding will provide greater transport capacities and 500 reefer container slots.
The vessel is replacing a smaller one previously deployed on the service. The Zim Hamburg berthed for the first time at EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH) on July 7.
From there she will regularly make a round voyage to Antwerp, Le Havre, Ashdod, Alexandria, Haifa, Ashdod, Valencia, Felixstowe, Rotterdam and back to Hamburg.
The main cargoes shipped via Hamburg will be food and beverages, chemical products, machinery and equipment. From Israel come chemical products, food and beverages, and products of agriculture, forestry, hunting, forestry and fisheries.
