RAS Al Khaimah airport was a hive of activity with the arrival of a shipment of 40,000 bees from Cairo, Egypt destined for various apiaries across the United Arab Emirates. It was the first large consignment of bees to be delivered this year on-board an Egypt Air cargo aircraft.
Airport chief executive Sanjay Khanna said detailed planning and equipment was required to handle the bees for Al Najeh Honey farms, including protective nets and stacking boxes, reported The National, Abu Dhabi.
'The entire team at RAK Airport put in immense effort to join all the dots. A lot of planning has gone behind this to achieve the final goal of handling and delivering live bees. Our airport is perfectly suited to handle the delicate and time sensitive cargo,' Mr Khanna was quoted as saying.
As one of the largest honey bee suppliers in the world that relies on air freight to transport its live consignments, Al Najeh Honey has transported 4.8 billion bees between Egypt, UAE, Oman, Sudan and Saudi Arabia. The company owns and operates 100 farms in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
In the UAE, the hives are stored under trees in remote desert properties mainly in the northern Emirates.
