A CONTAINERSHIP operated by Hanjin Shipping en route from Newark to the port of Wilmington has been disabled near Bald Head Island, off the coast of North Carolina, early in the morning of July 14, according to local media reports.
US Coast Guard officials told WSITV.com the 4,545-TEU Hanjin San Diego lost power entering the mouth of the Cape Fear River and was in danger of running aground, forcing crew members to drop anchor to prevent the ship from going aground, reported American Shipper.
The German-flagged vessel runs the CKYHE shipping alliance's AWE1 loop between Asia and the United States east coast. The service is operated with nine Hanjin ships of this size on a full port rotation of Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, New York/New Jersey, Wilmington, Savannah, Busan and Ningbo.
The US Coast Guard sent two tugs to the scene to move the ship further offshore and examine what may have caused the vessel to lose power.
