Accident in Istanbul Bosphorus Strait... .. Bearing Panama Flag 189 Meters long bulk carrier Star Harmony lwent aground at Yeniköy for an unknown reason ...
This morning at 8:15 am lıocal time (05:15 GMT) , the ship of 189 meters long Panamanian flag of Star Harmony was grounded while passing from Black Sea to to Marmara direction Black Sea to the Marmara Sea, possibly due to strong currents on the way back to Yenikoy.
The ship was going from Ukraine to Egypt with 47500 tons of corn. According to the information received, the ship did not take the pilot for the passage, which, by the experts, has been pointed out as the main reason of the accident.
After grounding authorities sent pilot and Kurtarma 3 voith tugboat to the scene, also fast rescue boats arrived there. No leekage reported from the ship but it looked to have gone a hard aground, eyewitnesses said.
Prevailing Northerly winds caused the currents in istanbul getting even stronger up to 5-6 knots which is very tricky during the turning around sharp bends in the Strait. Being the sharpest of these bends, Yeniköy area is a nightmare for ship captains during these wild currents during which they are strongly advised to take a pilot.
Authorities said that the ship would be attempted refloat by gigantic salvage vessel Nene Hatun tomorrow morning during which the traffic in the Strait will be suspended for 4 hours at least.
