The 'Kapitan Vecherkin', pushing two barges, collided with the catamaran boat 'Elan 12' on the Volga in front of Volgograd on June 11 at 10 p.m. The catamaran with at least 16 people on board was heading for Volgograd, returning from a countryside party. It was sailing at full speed with navigation lights turned off and was hidden from the tug's view by a sand bar, while approaching it. The catamaran skipper, the owner of the boat, didn’t notice the tug and barges either and slammed into one of barge’s starboard bow at full speed. The catamaran was pulled under the barge’s hull. 11 people on board died, including six women and four men. All of them were found inside the boat, they hadn’t been able to get out. Five more people were rescued by the tug’s crew and hospitalized with serious injures. The cause of the accident was still being investigated, but the catamaran did not comply with the navigational rules and did not attempt to avoid the collision. It did not have the required identification lights and the required documents for passenger transport on board. A mobile crane raised the wreck on June 12. Report with photos: www.dw.com/en/boa...
