DP WORLD Southampton has taken delivery of 10 new Kalmar straddle carriers worth GBP6 million (US$9.21 million).
The three-high diesel electric machines with twin lift capability arrived fully assembled from the manufacturer's plant in Gdynia, Poland.
The new straddle carriers are part of a replacement and investment programme that the terminal operator is undertaking to improve its operational fleet and landside capabilities, a British International Freight Association (BIFA) newsletter said.
Last year, the company bought six new three-high diesel electric machines with twin lift capability that are able to undertake twin discharge from beneath the terminal's cranes.
The operator is in the process of ordering a further nine straddle carriers, bringing the total number of new machines to 25 in three years.
Said terminal managing director Chris Lewis: "Over 30 per cent of our fleet will be less than five years old. We are committed to investing in our infrastructure and operational capabilities to ensure that Southampton can continue to meet the needs of our customers now and in the future."
