THE American Association of Port Authorities (PA) cheered US Senate passing America's Water Infrastructure Act in 99-1 vote, which authorises US$9 billion of Army Corps of Engineers civil-works projects.
'Today's passage continues the trend of streamlining maritime infrastructure improvements by expediting evaluations, enabling timely decisions and providing greater funding flexibilities, as well as authorising new projects,' said PA president and CEO Kurt Nagle.
In addition to authorising three coastal navigation channel improvement projects at Seattle, Galveston and San Juan, PR, the new legislation approves modifications to authorised navigation projects in Savannah, Norfolk and Sault St. Marie/Soo Locks.
It also expedites qualifying projects currently under study to proceed into the preliminary engineering and design phase, benefiting the Port of Tacoma, tributaries leading to the Port of New York and New Jersey, and ports in Houma, Baptist Colette and Bayou LaFourche, Louisiana and Nome, Alaska.
Furthermore, it directs the US Army Corps of Engineers to provide technical assistance when requested for sponsor-led navigation channel improvement studies, benefiting ports in Port Canaveral; Wilmington, NC; Savannah, and Port Fourchon, Houma, Baptiste Collette and Bayou LaFourche, Louisiana.
