The "Bergstraum" was in a near collision with a dredger and the Spijkenisse Bridge in Moerdijk on Apr 24, 2017, at 09.43. The cause was a malfunction of the moving bridge section keeping it from being opened in time. The chemical tanker which was coming from Dordrecht, had to make an emergency stop and could turn away only a few meters away from the bridge with a hard astern manoever. A dreder on the Hoogvliets side had to be quickly removed to avoid being hit by the tanker. Initially the moving part of the Spijkenisse bridge could not go up and down, but could be reset with manual force, followed by a test run which went well. The bridge had to rise because there was a lot of shipping traffic but in the decisive moment failed to do so. It was still unclear whether the captain got green light to pass the bridge or if it was a negligence from his side. Rijkswaterstaat launched an investigation into the incident as well as the cause of the bridge failure. The tanker once the bridge was open again around noon continued towards the Northsea destined to Alesund with an ETA of Apr 26.
