On March 18, 2017, wind gusts pushed away the "Werwelwind", 1690 ts (EU-No.: 8972455), from its berth in the seaport of Stade, where it was unloading the chemical phenol. The pressure of thestrong offshore wind with wind force 6 gusting to wind force 9 caused the brakes of the winches to slip, the lines loosened and the aft of the ship came off a few meters from the pier sop that it drifted towards the middle of the Elbe. After the ship suddenly moved away from the erasure head, an employee of the chemical factory DOW triggered the emergency separation so that the head of the loading arm was completely separated from the pipeline in order to prevent the loading arm from tearing off. As a result, small amounts of the toxic product phenol leaked onto the ship's deck. Only the fast action of the DOW operator prevented more damage. No misbehavior could be found by the crew. On the contrary, the Dutch captain was as prudent as the DOW's staff. After he had noticed the situation, he immediately gave instructions to start the main engine as well as the bow thruster and initiated maneuvers which moved the ship back to the erasure head.
