On June 18, 2018, at 7 a.m. the 'Barbara II' started sinking in the Bay of Biscay enroute to A Coruña due to strong water ingress. The skipper, an experienced sailor from Saarlouis, had to enter a life raft and issued a mayday call which was received by the MRCC in Bremen and relayed to their French counterparts of the CROSS Étel. A helicopter was dispatched and located the stowaway 130 miles SE of Brest. The man was safely hoisted aboard and taken to the base in Lanvéoc-Poulmic south of Brest.
