On Dec 30, 2017, at 7 a.m., while passing through the Karpathos Strait, the 'Orka 2', enroute from Alexandria to Gemlik, collided with the 'Yamal', a Russian landing ship of the Black Sea Fleet enroute from Syria to Sevastopol, about eight miles south of the island of Rhodes. No one was hurt, but at least the 'Yamal' was heavily damaged on port side. The accident happened as the freighter was following a parallel course and overtook the Russian ship on the port side. Without making sure that the overtaking was completed, suddenly changed course to starboard and caused a collision, according to the Russian Navy.
