The pilot boat "Pilot L242"" capsized on Dec 7, 2017, at 4.58 p.m. off Porvoo south of Borgå lighthouse. The crew of two was initially missing. The boat has been tasked to take off a pilot from the "Sten Nordic". Short before midnight the boat sank when the Coastguard tried to right it. The Coastguard had called boats from Borgå and Sveaborg to the site as well as the larger guard vessel "Turva". Also rescue helicopters from Helsinki and Turku as well as divers participated in the SAR operation. There was a strong swell which complicated the matters. Divers went down to the wreck and recovered the bodies in the night. The wreck was to be raised on Dec 11 at the earliest, weather permitting. There is heavy weather at the scene of the accident, which makes the rescue work difficult.Captain Lieutenant Mikko Lemminen said that the shooter capsized when it was about to pick up the pilot from the merchant vessel Sten Nordic."Pilot was aboard the merchant ship when the boat capsized, but there were two people aboard " said Lemminen.The fleet of ships started from Emsalö pilot station.The cause of the accident is still unclear.At half past eight in the evening, the rescue operation continued at sea by the helicopters and naval patrol boats continuing to search for the two people still missing.Earlier in the evening, the Turva guardian attempted to upright the capsized pilot boat.The Finnish Navy's Marine Guard has published on Twitter where the accident occurred. They also mention that the rescue work is in progress.
