MSC move
With less cargo, Europe in trouble & high-
er fuel costs every shipping line experi-
menting 10,000 TEU and above vessel
will brn hole in its pocket. For 2 crucial
things, filling so much cargo-dependen-
cy on NVOCC increases, lowering lin-
ear bargaining power & Infrastructure
in worlds most populous nations like
Indonesia, India, South Africa, doesnot
allow bigger vessels on its shores hence
interdependency on feeder still remians
incaresing the trans-operational costs. So
where exactly is economies of scale here?

The AIS track-lines indicate the COSCO
CONCORDIA “deviated significantly”
from its intended route. Reports also indi-
cate the deviation occurred for reason(s)
that had nothing to do with the “safety
of vessel, passenger, and crew” reasons.
Just a couple of questions/comments...
Deviations From Intended Route Q./ What
is the owner/operator’s policy govern-
ing “unofficial/unauthorized” deviations
from long-established routes? If such a
policy exists, what, when, and how was
it implemented? If such a policy does
not exist - why not? Pass Bye Salutes -
Culpability of Cruise Line Senior Mgt.
Q./ To what extent was Costa Lines senior
management aware of the practice of
its officers to deviate from their intend-
ed tracks for “unofficial pass byes?” If
they were aware, when did first learn
of the practice and from whom? If they
were not aware - why not? Explain [See

Awareness Q./ Other than the officers on
watch - were there any other non-watch-
standing individuals/non-navigational
tasks/conversations occurring on the
bridge at the time of the grounding? See

Dependence/Over-reliance on Integrated
Bridge Systems Q./To what extent was the
COSCO CONCORDIA under the control
of its integrated bridge system (auto-
pilot/GPS) between departure and the
time of grounding. [See NTSB Report:

Dodged The Bullet.. Will someone please
explain how lucky everyone involved in
this accident is and why -- from a dam-
aged stability/free surface effect/center of
gravity viewpoint? The mega cruise ships
with their enormous superstructures and
shallow draughts -- are tragedies wait-
ing to happen. The master did something
“right” after all - after the fact....

Seanews should know better!
The larger ship is not a ‘supertanker’ It’s
not even a tanker. There are cranes and
hatch cover on deck. It’s a large bulk
carrier. In any case, at only 57,000 tons
deadweight a tanker does not attract the
prefix ‘super’.

The dangers of interaction
This demonstrates the dangers of interac-
tion between vessels manoeuvreing at
close quaters. The vessel being overtaken
takes a shear across the bows of the over-
taking vessel due to pressure from the
overtaking vessels bow. The overtaking
vessel appears to have not been keeping
clear.
