SeaNews: What kind of activities do
you conduct to promote maritime areas
in Turkey?
Prof. Nil Güler:
Student Assemblies are
held. This year we organized with GEMİMO
the 4th Student Assembly. We’ve been orga-
nizing a sea festival for 4 years. We organize
sailing contests. We have reinforced our
rowing team and they have become very
successful. In volleyball, our girls are very
successful. We have a traditional “fish day”
annually; a very extensive social event.
The maritime festival is part of the social
and cultural events. It is open to other social
environments. We have lots of visitors from
high schools. Our university has presenta-
tion days to promote the faculties. We send
our posters to other provinces. We’ve estab-
lished a water sports center. We promote
rowing as a sports branch to the children of
Tuzla and make them love the sea.
SeaNews:What will be the primary
message at the graduation ceremony on
July 1st, this year?
This will be a little early to communicate;
but my primary message is asking my stu-
dents to contribute to the development of
their country, to be beneficial to their coun-
try and to love their country. This is what I
always ask from them.
SeaNews: Why should the students
choose ITU Maritime Faculty for high
education? Why should they not?
Prof. Nil Güler:
Our faculty is among the
top preferences of the students. They prefer
it at the top of their list; therefore they join
us with awareness. We are either the first or
the second choice of our students. They love
the marine environment; they know employ-
ment opportunities are abundant. They know
the salaries are high. Our faculty has a his-
tory of 129 years. They know that we have
a tradition and we perform studies worthy
of such tradition and culture. Anyone who
wants to work in the maritime sector, con-
siders us as the first address to apply. Our
experience, infrastructure, foundation and
graduates make us the first choice of all
candidates.
SeaNews: What would you like to add?
Prof. Nil Güler:
As a faculty we have a
mission to conduct academic researches as
well. A faculty’s task is not only to train
their students, but to do scientific studies
too. Therefore, for the last two years we
have concentrated on project-based studies.
We have encouraged our academic staff in
that direction.
We are enthusiastic to get both inter-
national and national projects. We have a
project in cooperation with the EU, with
Netherlands. We have another project with
İstanbul Development Agency.
Our faculty is located on a campus; we, at
the same time, need to deal with any issues
that may arise on a campus site. We have,
in that sense, a different status compared to
the other faculties of ITU. We have shortage
of buildings. We want to have a new multi-
purpose building built for education in near
future. We’ve established a navigation labo-
ratory in the tower, as well as seamanship
and meteorology laboratories.
We’ve established a new chemistry and
engine laboratory.
SeaNews: How do you find our maga-
zine?
Prof. Nil Güler:
I like the idea that the
magazine is both in Turkish and English;
this is a very confident attempt. I wish that in
the future it will have a scientific section as
well, or a scientific supplement.
