Interview
SeaNews: Could you please give us
some information about the faculty?
From which percentile of the candi-
dates does ITU Maritime Faculty accept
students?
Prof. Nil Güler:
The his-
tory of our faculty goes back
to the school “Leyli Tüccar
Kaptan Mektebi” founded
on December 5, 1884 in
Heybeli Island of İstanbul as
part of the Naval Academy, in
order to promote civil mari-
time activities. This school
known as Maritime College
was restructured in 1992 as a
faculty of ITU.
We accept students from
high ranking percentiles. I
could say that the lowest
scores to be accepted corre-
spond to the top 3 percent.
Among the other faculties of ITU, this cor-
responds to an average level and shows an
increasing trend.
SeaNews: After
the opening of the
“Student Hostel
Binali Yıldırım”,
were you able
to accommodate
boarding stu-
dents? What is
the ratio of the
boarders?
Our faculty used
to have boarding
facilities. When the
hostel was opened,
former graduates
had the idea that
the boarding culture
would
continue.
However, this facil-
ity has been designed as a hostel; i.e. it is not
compulsory to stay in the hostel as boarders.
We don’t have a boarding system. The hostel
was able to be opened on the same day as
the start of the school. Until the operational
procedures were complete, most of our stu-
dents found places for residence. Therefore
the hostel is not full. And the basic reason
for that is, as I’ve mentioned before, that the
hostel was opened on the day of start for the
education year.
SeaNews: Is the faculty ship “Akdeniz”
functional? How do you address the
students’ training need?
Prof. Nil Güler:
It’s been a long time
since Akdeniz (i.e. Mediterranean) was last
used for the purpose of training. This year,
it was decided to be scrapped. With a deci-
sion, its status was changed. When we first
had Akdeniz, our students were having their
