The oil slick caused by the 'Sanchi' in the East China Sea has spread noticeably, raising the prospect for wider environmental damage. The fuel from the sunken tanker, which was carrying 1 million barrels of condensate, expanded to cover as much as 52 square miles at 12 p.m. local time on Jan 15, up from about 3.9 square miles the previous day. The fire, which had been burning off some of the highly flammable type of light oil, has dissipated. The blaze had been seen as helping to limit the fallout. It was unknown if all of the condensate was released, or if some remained in intact cargo holds on the ship at the seabed The Chinese authorities were still assessing the damage. Because the oil slick was drifting southeast away from the coastal area where it sank in the East China Sea, the spill was not having a significant impact on the marine ecological environment around the shore.
