NEW JERSEY Governor Chris Christie signed a widely supported bill into law which eliminates the Port of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) cargo facility fee - or will do when New York passes its own law which it is doing.
In 2011, the PANYNJ became the only port in the US to impose a cargo facility charge. The fee charged is US$4.95 per TEU, $9.90 per FEU and $1.11 per unit for vehicle cargo.
Maersk Line said the fee cost the company - the world's largest container shipping company - $3.5 million a year.
"This legislation goes a long way in ensuring that the Port of New York and New Jersey remains competitive with ports across the country," said Doug Morgante, Maersk's director of state government relations.
"We are grateful that Governor Christie recognised how critical removing this onerous fee is to the vitality of the maritime industry," said Mr Morgante.
The bill remains inactive until New York state passes companion legislation. New York state Senator Michael Ranzenhofer introduced such a bill on January 8, and it now before the New York Senate Transportation Committee.
