As a result of the crash, the pilot was overturned and the pilot on board was drowned. The victim is Walter Bonazza, 55, of Cervignano. The alarm went off at 17 o'clock, but the body was recovered by the divers from the Harbor Master's Office, intervening with the Guard of Finance in rescue operations, at 19.30.According to a first reconstruction of the facts, a 61-meter merchant ship flying the flag of Palau carrying machinery coming from the port of Koper (Slovenia) and headed probably to Samsun (Turkey) had just left Porto Margreth for the open sea board, as a protocol, the pilot indicating the route to go out of the river Corno and reach the sea.The ship was followed by the boat known as "Pilot", with the second pilot on board. For reasons still to be seen, it seems that the "pilot" suddenly "spurred" the ship: it is suspected Walter Bonazza might have accused a plague and then left the boat without a guide. Confirmation would also come from the colleague who was on board the merchant ship: he had noticed that the pilot came at sustained speed and the colleague did not answer the calls. In the impact, the pilot was overturned, with the man still inside. From the merchant ship an alarm was issued to the Harbor Master's Office, immediately on the spot with the Coast Guard and the Guardia di Finanza; some fishermen who were in the area also came to the aid. At the scene of the incident, the Monfalcone firefighters' divers who started the search for humans. The pilot has always kept above the floating line, causing the rescuers to be optimistic about finding the living man.Towards 19.30, the boat was hooked up and it was overturned: aboard, unfortunately, inside the cabin, the now lifeless body of man. The merchant ship was seized. Investigations are coordinated by the Prosecutor of the Republic of Gorizia.Walter Bonazza had long been the official cruise ship of Carnival.
