AN accident involving a lifeboat that was released from a Hong Kong-flagged oil and chemical tanker 19,997-dwt MTM Westport while it was off the Elbe River estuary has claimed the life of one seafarer and left two others seriously injured, who were found aboard the lifeboat 11 miles southeast of Helgoland.
Local reports alleged that the boat fell from a height of 11 metres or 36 feet.
The German Society for Sea Rescue Service reported that its Bremen unit responded to a report that one man was overboard and two seriously injured on board a lifeboat.
Rescue boats were dispatched to the scene to attend the injured men while a search and rescue helicopter plucked a man from the water.
One man died despite efforts to revive him by a doctor who was flown to the scene. The two injured men were flown to a local hospital for treatment, reported London's Tanker Operator.
