NYK, NYK Group South Asia (NGSA) and NYK Shipmanagement (NYKSM) have
conducted an accident-response drill based on the mock scenario of the
containership, NYK Themis being involved in a serious accident.
The scenario had the containership depart from Singapore, proceed eastwards to enter the Singapore Strait's traffic separation lanes, and then collide with another box ship arriving at the port of Singapore.
The collision was intended to have left a hole in the hull on starboard quarter, enabling about 300 tons of oil to leak from the hole.
The following actions were then taken, including all three of the group's business units establishing a crisis management headquarters in response to the urgent report sent to NYKSM from the vessel.
The crisis management headquarters then reported information about the accident to the local port authority and responded to the incident to minimise the damage and control the oil spilled from the vessel, a company statement said.
"Through this joint drill, the three NYK companies were able to reconfirm the importance of cooperation with related parties and the appropriate communication of information," it said.
