The shipping company Julia Shipping wiil receive a fine of two million Norwegian crowns from Turkish authorities in connection with an oil leakage from the 'Harrier'. On August 1, the ship, classified as waste, received the approval of Norwegian and Turkish authorities to sail to a breaker in Aliaga. Earlier this week large amounts of oil leaked out in the province of Izmir. Studies conducted by the research center TÜBIAK showed that the oil originated from the 'Harrier' which had been beached on Aug 31. The oil film along the coast extended over 2.5 kilometers. The cause of the leak, which seemed to have happened before the ship arrived at the recycling yard, was currently unknown. The case was being investigated further. The owner of the ship was not aware that the penalty has been imposed. The Norsk Gjenvinning has been responsible for applying for export of the Norwegian ship. In April, the company signed a contract with the shipping company Julia Shipping, which in August was granted permission to transport the ship to Turkey. They had then paid the around 7 million Norewgian crowns they owed to the Stavanger company GMC Maritime. The ship was at GMC's dock in Gismarvik in Tysvær from February to July 2017 before it was taken to Farsund. Norsk Gjenvinning, Ingrid Bjørdal was familiar with the oil leakage and closely following the authorities, the shipyard and the shipping company to be informed and continuously updated about the incident, the case being a matter between owner, shipyard and Turkish authorities.
