The "BBC Shanghai" suffered engine failure on Mar 15, 2017, about 90 miles northeast of East London, while en route from Durban to Lagos. She went adrift with 11 crew members on board 35 kilometers off Mazeppa Bay in an unusualy cyclone affected south swell. The Transnet tug "Shasa" (MMSI: 601119500) was sent to assist and left East London on March 16 at 2 p.m. The "BBC Shanghai" was then 16 miles off Mbashe Point. The casualty was taken in tow about 9 p.m. and safely berthed on March 17 at 10 a.m.
