SINGAPOREAN terminal operator Portek International has signed an agreement with Papua New Guinea Ports Corporation Limited (PNGPCL) to collaborate in operating PNGPCL's two big container terminals for five years.
The largest port in the country is in Lae where the terminal handles 140,000 TEU a year. The second handles 79,000 TEU annually at the national capital of Port Moresby.
Portek will soon send a team of experts to review operations, IT, equipment engineering and maintenance, and will engage in training of PNGPCL staff in the use of Portek's in-house terminal management system.
Portek had been working closely with PNGPCL since the provision of 10 units of refurbished rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTG) by Portek to the Lae and Port Moresby terminals in 2011.
"This is an excellent opportunity for Portek to work with PNGPCL, a very progressive and forward-looking organisation with the will to excel in and to raise its staff to even higher standards of professionalism," said Portek International CEO Takao Omori.
Portek International is a global terminal operator and port equipment engineering solutions provider that manages eight container and multipurpose terminals in Africa, Indonesia and Europe.
