The Kerala high court ordered the Director General of Shipping on June 12 to seize the voice data recorder and other logs of the "Amber L" after she hit a fishing boat off the Kochi coast. A petition filed by Sujatha, wife of Antony John Jesu Alexander who died in the accident in the early hours of Sunday, was considered by the court. She had raised a plea for seizing the ship's equipment and records containing details of the course of the ship during the admission hearing on the petition on June 12. Through the petition, Sujatha was seeking an HC order to the central government to initiate an enquiry as per Merchant Shipping Act. As per provisions of the Act, only the central government can initiate a judicial probe into incidents involving merchant ships. In addition to seeking a court directive to the central government to initiate an enquiry, Sujatha iwas s demanding a court order for seizing and preserving all records and data related to the navigation course undertaken by the ship on the fateful day.
