The “Bellatrix” ran aground on a reef north of the island of Lesvos in the morning of Feb 16, 2017. The ship with a crew of 12, nine Ukrainians and three Georgians, on board suffered a crack in the hull and took on some water, starting to tilt slightly. On scene were winds of five Beaufort. Greek Coastguard officials inspected the vessel and the tug "John" has surrounded the ship with an oil boom of 250 meters length in order to prevent an oil contamination. The “Bellatrix” had set sail from Mykolayiv on Jan 18 with a cargo of grain and was heading to Izmir. A survey by divers in the morning of Feb 17 showed thatthe rudder, the propeller shaft and the propeller were not damaged. A patrol boat of the Coast Guard remained on site for assistance if needed. The Port Authority Mythimna banned the ship from sailing further.
