THE Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced that the trial period for the Just-in-Time Transit Service (JIT) has been extended until further notice to provide the service to more vessels.
Under the changes, non-booked vessels may request to participate in the JIT service. However, participation will be confirmed after securing a booking slot for that specific transit date, GAC Hot Port News reported.
The selection procedure published earlier for "supers" (vessels with beams of 27.74 metres) that submit their request at least 96 hours before the proposed transit date will remain as announced, with the exception of vessels that secured bookings before submitting requests for participation in the JIT service.
Vessels may submit their joint request to participate in the JIT service less than 96 hours prior to their intended transit date, but no later than 11am hours on the closing date of the third booking period. The allocation of these slots will be based in the order the requests were received.
Finally, two JIT service slots per day will be offered to "regulars" (vessels under 27.74 metres or 91 feet in beam) without transit restrictions, with a maximum of one JIT service slot per direction. The allocation of these JIT service slots will be determined by the order the requests were received.
During the trial period the JIT service will be offered with no additional cost to the vessel, but the ACP will not be liable for any loss or damage that may arise from the client's participation in the JIT service trial. However, this does not refer to damages resulting from navigation in the Panama Canal in accordance with the Panama Canal Authority Organic Law and its regulations.
The ACP reserves the right to suspend this trial period, in whole or in part, and for an indefinite period of time, for operational or other reasons. Vessels that were confirmed a JIT service slot prior to a suspension of the service will retain their slot.
