THE Los Angeles Harbour Commission has approved the expansion of APL's Pier 300 terminal to increase its capacity to more than 3.2 million TEU, enabling 57 per cent more calls and 65 per cent more cargo on the expanded 347-acre site.

The commission has certified the final environmental impact report and approved the proposed expansion of the port's APL terminal operated by long-time tenant Eagle Marine Services.

Due to begin in late 2012, the US$196 million redevelopment of Pier 300, will add a further 1,250 feet of new wharf and 41 acres of backup yard, reports UK's Port Technology International.

"We are pleased that we were able to partner with Eagle Marine Services to move this much-needed project forward," said LA Harbour Commission president Cindy Miscikowski.
