MAJOR shipping organisations have expressed disappointment at the European Parliament's recent adoption of a system of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of ship carbon emissions.
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) and Intercargo said that they were saddened by the EU decision to pre-empt the UN talks on a global data collection on carbon emissions.
Until now, with the industry's support, the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) negotiations have been progressing well, and now the EU measure will be seen as a fait accompli, the group said.
The EU Regulation includes controversial elements, such as the publication of commercially sensitive data, an idea which had been rejected by most IMO governments during in October 2014, reported London's Tanker Operator.
It is now necessary for the EU to explain its regulation can be implemented in a way compatible with whatever the IMO passes while avoiding complications of separate regional regimes.
Shipping industry associations reiterated that the latest IMO Green House Gas Study, published in 2014, found that international shipping had reduced its total CO2 emissions by more than 10 per cent between 2007 and 2012, despite an increase in maritime trade.
