THE Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) has spot Asia-Europe rates at US$399 per TEU, but some shippers are beating that down to $350 per TEU this week, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.
Even though $399 per TEU is the lowest SCFI rate ever recorded for Asia Europe, some shippers can beat that - and say they consistently get better than historic low spot rates from carriers.
Shippers and forwarders say that even lower rates are being achieved by freight buyers with one quoted as saying he paid a bit less than "a bit less" than $800 per FEU.
Another told JOC.com that he had won rates for a shipment from Shanghai to Hamburg at $700 per FEU - that's $350 per TEU.
Such was confirmed by a forwarder with offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong. JOC.com has regularly bounced the SCFI's weekly spot rates off this forwarder and his reaction has consistently been, "that is more than I am paying on Asia-Europe."
The forwarder said even though his was a medium-sized business, he secured freight rates that were consistently below the rates being recorded by the SCFI.
