THE 17,722-TEU newbuilding, CMA CGM Kerguelen, has taken the title of being the world's largest containership to sail under the British flag.
The vessel is due to call at Southampton port on May 13 deployed on the shipping line's FAL service that links Europe to the Middle East and Asia, reports Hellenic Shipping News.
To get a better idea of its gigantic carrying capacity, a full load of containers aligned would cover the distance between London and Southampton. The ship is longer than the Empire State Building and wider than an Olympic pool.
Delivered at the end of March the newbuilding is the first of a series of six box ships of the same size that will be delivered to CMA CGM this year.
She is equipped with the latest environmental technologies that are designed to reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent compared to vessels of the previous generation.
