CONTAINER volumes through Pakistan's principal Port of Karachi posted a 5.9 per cent year-on year increase in the first half of fiscal year 2014-2015 to 833,000 TEU, port authorities announced.
Officials said 385 containerships, 106 bulk cargo ships, 114 general cargo ships and 237 oil tankers visited the port during the reporting period.
Karachi Port Trust (KPT) achieved 4.75 per cent year-on-year growth with a total of 21.652 million tonnes of cargo handled, and a 6.05 per cent increase in container throughput during the first half of fiscal 2014-2015.
Officials said the current fiscal year's dry cargo volumes grew 4.79 per cent at 14.9 million tonnes compared to 14.2 million tonnes in the last half of the past fiscal year, reported Pakistan's Customs Today magazine.
Liquid bulk cargo rose 4.66 per cent with 6.670 million tonnes handled compared to 6.373 million tonnes handled during June to December 2013-2014.
