A Kuwaiti container ship’s captain and first officer have been both detained for four days after their ship was involved in a collisionwith a fishing vessel in the Red Sea, resulting in the killing of 13 Egyptians, a public prosecutor commented on Tuesday.
According to a statement made by the prosecutor on Monday, the preliminary reports showed that the fishing vessel had capsized following the collision it suffered with the Kuwaiti ship, which had just passed through the Suez Canal and was heading south.
The collision occurred near Ras Gharib around half point of theGulf of Suez. The container ship’s crew is under questioning by the prosecutor.The prosecutor did not give out neither the name of the ship or the company’s one.
According to judicial sources it appears that the ship may have been sailing under the Panamanian flag and was allegedly travelling from Italy to Saudi Arabia. Kuwaiti officials were not available for any type of comment.Unconfirmed information points the Kuwait-flagged Al Safat as the vessel involved in the collision.
Meanwhile, the death toll of the collision has risen to 17 as rescuers retrieved four more bodies from the sunken Badr.A source told VesselFinder that the cargo ship was sailing in her right course and speed when the fishing boat cut her way.
The cargo ship went hard to port in attempt to avoid the clash but unfortunately hit the fishing boat with her aft.The master of the cargo ship was informed by the officer on board about the incident. He contacted VTS Ras Gharibtelling them he suspected they had hit a boat. Since no distress call was received, the cargo ship was allowed to continue and was arrested upon her arrival in Safaga Port.According to our source, the small fishing vessel had 44 men on board.
