THE Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners has bestowed the prestigious Port Pilot Award on the CEO and managing director of Orient Overseas Container Line, Andrew Tung, for his contributions to international trade within the maritime industry.
Mr Tung is the 77th recipient of the award, but the first third-generation winner of the accolade.
His father, the former and first Chief Executive of Hong Kong, CH Tung, received the award in 1987 and his grandfather, OOCL founder CY Tung, in 1977.
Said Harbour Commission president Doug Drummond: "[Andy Tung's] progressive leadership and lifelong dedication to reshaping and enhancing international trade, as we've seen in our next-generation Middle Harbour terminal partnership, should serve as a glowing example for all industry executives."
Under Mr Tung's leadership, OOCL has moved ahead in partnership with the Port of Long Beach on the US$1.3 billion Middle Harbour modernisation project.
The new terminal will feature the world's most advanced technology, doubling capacity and cutting emissions in half, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
Mr Tung has led Hong Kong's OOCL, one of the top shipping lines calling at the port, in various management roles since March 2006.
