COSTLY low-sulphur fuel, mandated for north European waters from January 1, will cost Maersk Line US$200 million a year more and will be passed on to shippers in bunker surcharges, said CEO Soren Skou.
Speaking at a capital markets day in Copenhagen, he said Maersk's shortsea unit Seago, which operates entirely in control zone waters of the Baltic, North Sea and English Channel, will be hit hardest by the fuel that costs 60 per cent more than standard bunker.
As part of Maersk’s newbuilding strategy, Mr Skou said he was looking at gas-powered vessels, reported Lloyd's List, adding that he also believes dual-fuel tonnage may be another possibility.
He was less keen on scubbers that allowed standard bunker to be use by removing sulphur from the exhaust.
