TAIWAN's Evergreen Line has dropped Taranto from its Med-FE-WCNA UAM Pendulum service from October for the Greek port of Piraeus to coincide with the introduction of its 7,000-TEUers to replace 5,300-6,300 TEU ships.
Italy's Taranto, in the southern Adriatic, currently enjoys a double call by the UAM ships, in and out of the Adriatic. The last UAM Taranto call will occur on September 24 with double calls at Piraeus inserted in its place, reports Alphaliner.
The UAM will henceforth call at Alexandria, Ashdod, Piraeus, Trieste, Koper, Piraeus, Colombo, Tanjung Pelepas, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Tacoma, Vancouver, Tokyo, Osaka, Busan, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Taipei, Shenzhen-Shekou, Shenzhen-Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas and back to Alexandria.
Since reaching a peak of 892,000 TEU in 2006, Taranto Container Terminal's (TCT) throughput has been in decline with volumes of 197,000 TEU last year, the lowest since Evergreen started there in 2001, taking on a 60-year concession.
Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) acquired a 50 per cent share in 2008 to become the controlling shareholder at TCT in exchange for Evergreen taking a minority stake in London Thamesport (LTP) and ECT Delta in Rotterdam.
Since 2011, Evergreen has shifted its main Med transshipment hub from Taranto to Piraeus, with Port Said and Algeciras (TTI) also used.
