THE crew the 2,600-TEU Manukai have rescued three people from their disabled sailboat after it took on water in Hurricane Julio and braved 30-foot waves hundreds of miles from Hawaii, the US Coast Guard said.
The crew of the Matson Line ship brought the three people from the 42-foot sailboat on board shortly before 8am after previous attempts to rescue them failed because of the high seas.
The crew of the boat, called the Walkabout, had set out from Stockton, California, but got into trouble about 400 miles northeast of the island of Oahu, Reuters reported.
The sailboat was caught in winds of 92 to 115 miles per hour and as it took on water when one of its hatches was blown away along with its life raft.
The Manukai crew first spotted them and deployed a their own life raft, but conditions were too rough for the stranded sailors to get on board. So all efforts were abandoned as night fell.
At daybreak the Manukai crew managed to pull the Walkabout to the containership, enabling the three sailors to climb a ladder.
